Run GEOtop executable for Windows 7

THIS GUIDE IS WORK IN PROGRESS! Every type of feedback will be appreciated and will be very useful for me.

To run the GEOtop binary you have to install Cygwin. This is the only installation required.

Download the executable from the Official Web Site on the basis of the architecture of your machine (32-64bit). This guide has been done only for 64bit machines because at the moment no 32bit executable is ready. It will be as soon as possible.

Now type proj in the Search area

proj1

Expand the section Libs

proj2

Click on Skip on the three proj libraries:

  • libproj-devel
  • libproj1
  • proj

proj3

Then click on Next

proj4

Then click on Next again, in order to install all the dependencies

proj5

At the end of the installation, you should find an icon on the Desktop and one on the Start Menu

proj6

Double click on the icon on the Desktop

proj7

Now you have to enter into the working directory

$ cd /cygdrive/c/Users/<username>/path/to/working/directory

The first part of the path /cygdrive/c/Users/ is necessary to get to the user’s home.

For example, I copied the small_example from the tests/test_sample_run/ directory of the source code of GEOtop on my Desktop.
For example, I downloaded the zip file of the examples from the the Official GEOtop Examples Repository into my Desktop. To run the small_example, unzip the package and enter into the following directory

$ cd /cygdrive/c/Users/francesco/Desktop/geotop_examples-master/3D/small_example/

Then you can download the Windows 7 GEOtop executable from the Official GEOtop Repository entering in the Windows/7/64bit/ folder, clicking on the executable and then on view the full file. (You might want to download the Windows 10 GEOtop executable. In this case, just enter in the Windows/10/64bit/ folder of the Official GEOtop Repository and follow the same instructions for Windows 7)

Put it inside the working directory (small_example in this case) and from the terminal type

$ ./geotop_mio-x86_64.exe .

It should work. If not write on the GEOtop users mailing list reporting the error.

PAY ATTENTION: this executable had been built against MeteoIO, so the geotop.inpts of your working directory has to be properly set. To get an example, you can see small_example from the Official GEOtop Examples Repository

At the moment only the executable for 64bit machine is ready. For 32bit machine it will be ready as soon as possible.

FOR EVERY TYPE OF FEEDBACK PLEASE WRITE ON THE GEOtop USERS MAILING LIST!!!
